OBJECTIVE: To provide the latest information about new AIDS/HIV investigational therapies, locations where research is being conducted, and how to enroll in clinical trials. DESCRIPTION: The AIDS Clinical Trials Information Service is a central resource providing current information on federally and privately sponsored clinical trials for AIDS patients and others infected with HIV. This service is sponsored by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, the National Library of Medicine, and the Food and Drug Administration. One toll-free number puts callers in touch with experienced health specialists who access databases featuring the latest information on clinical trials underway and the therapies being investigated. Information which can be provided includes purpose of study, studies that are open, study locations, eligibility requirements, contact names and telephone numbers of the respective trial sites. Callers receive this information immediately over the telephone and on request, may receive a printout of a customized search of the clinical trials/drug databases. This information is provided free of charge. The databases are also online through NLM. RESULTS: From May 1989 through December 1992 over 108,000 calls had been received. Of the callers, 55%-60% were patients, family and friends and 12%-15% were physicians and other health care professionals. Over 17,000 customized searches have been completed and over 27,000 pieces of information relating to clinical trials have been disseminated. In addition to receiving calls from throughout the United States and its territories, ACTIS has received calls from Canada, Mexico, the United Kingdom, Spain. CONCLUSION: AIDS Clinical Trials Information Service responds to an important need by providing information on clinical trials leading to trial enrollment and informing individuals of therapeutic options under investigation.
