OBJECTIVE: To reduce HIV risk behaviors in drug users (DU) of the Alpes-Maritimes (AM). METHOD: 1) Counselling sessions to improve DU's knowledge about HIV transmission. 2) prevention messages and supports developed by DU. 3) Forming of an evaluation program committee with DU. 4) Chemist's network for the distribution of DU prevention supports. 5) Continuous coordination with DU's health care institutions. RESULTS: Between November 1991 and December 1992, 176 DU have received counselling at the Intersecteur; 12 have accepted to participate to the evaluation committee. A syringe case with prevention messages have been designed by the DU; 25,000 have been delivered in 1992 by a network of 105 chemists. Evaluation survey have been realized in Nov 1991 and Nov 1992. CONCLUSION: Besides changes in DU risk behaviors showed by the evaluation survey realized in Nov 1992, other positive effects occurred: Improvement in social and medical institution cooperation in caring for drug addicts; projects of new prevention strategies (exchange needles program, methadone program....) with new partners.
