PROBLEM: How can counseling of unsafe sex problems of young gay men stimulate the implementation of safe sex behaviour? DESCRIPTION OF PROJECT: The Schorerfoundation is a Gay & Lesbian Mental Health Centre, which offers a psychosocial help program for HIV-problems since 1984. In a new project a model is developed for counselling unsafe sex problems of young gay men. After a decade of the aids-epidemic a new generation of young gay men is confronted with typical problems concerning (un)safe sex. Instead of a moralistic approach of condemning unsafe sex behaviour, the Schorer-model contains an open attitude towards discussing risky behaviour, so these men gain insight in their motives and get more control over their behaviour. RESULTS: First: A content analyses of the therapeutic sessions with young gay men (age 18-25; N = 17) puts forward motives for unsafe sex behaviour: lack of information about gay sex-codes; inexperience with gay sex-role-behaviour; romantic feelings; masochistic/sadistic fantasies; (auto)destructive behaviour; nihilist attitude. Second: A counselling-model is developed for changing obstinate unsafe sex behaviour of young gay men. The counselling-process contains 6 stages: creating a confidential working alliance; supply safe sex information; listening to the typical problems; exposure of underlying motives and conflicts; practice behavioural change; implementation of safe sex behaviour.
