Although the presence of HIV-1 antibodies in saliva of infected patients has been widely documented, few publications refer to HIV-2 antibodies. Results on saliva from 18 HIV-2 infected individuals are described here. Saliva and serum specimens were collected from five known HIV-2 infected patients in the United States but of West African origin. Saliva was collected using the Omni-SAL collection device (Saliva Diagnostic Systems, Inc., Vancouver, WA). Abbott HIVAB HIV-1 EIA, BioChem ImmunoSystems Detect HIV-1/-2 EIA, Genetic Systems HIV-1/HIV-2 EIA and HIV-2 EIA, and Waldheim Pharmazeutika Fluorognost HIV-1 IFA and HIV-2 IFA were performed on all serum and saliva specimens. In addition, Orgenics ImmunoComb BiSpot HIV-1 and HIV-2 was performed on saliva specimens. Testing procedures had been optimized for saliva. All saliva and serum specimens were positive by HIV-2 and HIV-1/2 assays. Cross reactivity with HIV-1 was observed in all sera but only in 40% of saliva specimens. Serum and saliva paired specimens were collected from an additional 13 HIV-2 infected individuals in the Ivory Coast. All serum specimens were shown to be positive for HIV-2 antibodies with Cambridge Biotech HIV-2 Western blot assay. Saliva specimens were tested with the Genetic Systems HIV-2 EIA, using an optimized in-house protocol. Sera were tested using the manufacturers protocol. All were positive. In summary, saliva from all HIV-2 infected individuals contained HIV-2 antibodies as measured by EIA and IFA.
