Salmonella enteritidis PT4 food poisoning and HIV infection.

Das S, Das PK; International Conference on AIDS.

Int Conf AIDS. 1994 Aug 7-12; 10: 324 (abstract no. PC0226).

OBJECTIVE: To aware consciousness about the newer opportunistic infection in cases of AIDS/HIV infection. METHODS: Published reports of Salmonella enteritidis PT4 food poisoning from USA and European Countries including UK have been analysed RESULTS: There has been found a remarkable significant correlation between the reported cases of S. enteritidis PT4 food poisoning and cases of HIV infection in the aforesaid areas. DISCUSSION: In 1980's increased incidence of S. enteritidis PT4 food poisoning was reported from various parts of the Globe. This could not be explained neither by a chance incidence nor by more awareness or better diagnostic facilities. As it is well known that these bacteria may undergo rapid genetic changes and bacteriophagic transduction, a possible relationship with HIV from this angle might be shared. Future research from this corner might be fruitful and might not be unexpected in the developed countries.
