Issue: The FRIA prefecture is one of the principal mining regions in Guinea. It appears to be privileged judging by the number of TV stations (National, CFI, TV5,.) serving the area. From this one can assume that the people have access to information. However, the young people, through the enthusiasm they have shown for this project, have expressed their desire to implicate themselves in STD/AIDS prevention efforts in their locality. The city center of FRIA has four establishments (2 junior high schools, 1 high school and 1 professional training center), with about 4,010 students (914 girls and 3,069 boys). Objective: To set up a new prevention project, for and by young people, so as to warn of the risks of STD/AIDS by: - improving the knowledge of young people about STDs/AIDS, and by involving them in education campaigns. - bringing about a change in behavior that results in a low risk of transmission for STDs/AIDS. Methods: - Identification and installation of committees of opinion leaders. - CAP' study among opinion leaders, on the one hand, and among a representative sample of the school going population, on the other. - Peer education through IEC campaigns using sporting, artistic, and cultural themes. Preliminary results from the CAP study have identified the following problems: - Unwanted pregnancies are common at the junior high school and high school levels. - sexual relations are taking place among young people (average age of 14).
