An evaluation of sodium dodecylsulfate-poly-acrylamide gel electroforesis immunoblotting in syphilis diagnosis was made with Blotsyph Diagast Kit: antibodies against the major proteic antigens were detected with this technique. Seventy patients were tested grouped as follows: 1) forty patients had clinical evidence of syphilis at different stage 2) twenty patients had positive sera, as far as serology was concerned, but they didn't have clinical evidence of the disease 3) ten patients without syphilis were the control group. Antibodies against treponemic specific antigens (15.5 kd and 47.0 kd) were found in all patients with clinical symptoms and in 17 out of 20 patients with only serological evidence of the disease (sensitibility 95%). These three contrasting cases were discussed as possible biological false positives. Non leutic patients in control group were all negative (specificity 100%). CONCLUSION: Western immunoblotting test may be considered a sensible and specific test in syphilis diagnosis, useful as confirmatory test.
