OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effect of HIV infection on menstrual disturbances in HIV positive women. METHODS: Follow-up of 216 HIV positive women and 278 HIV negative previously enrolled into a prospective study of mother-to-child transmission of HIV. All women involved in the study had sustained a gynecological examination, a pregnancy test in case of amenorrhea. A questionnaire had been submitted to exclude those under pills or other birth control methods. RESULTS: Out of 216 HIV(+) women, 33(15.3%) died; among whom 13(6%) with AIDS experienced menstrual disturbances especially 0.4% of metrorrhagia and 5.6% of non gravidic amenorrhea. However, in 183 HIV(+) women still alive (84.7%) and followed, 8(3.7%) experienced menstrual disturbances. Among them 2.7% with AIDS showed polymenorrhea, metrorrhagia and non gravidic amenorrhea, while 0.9% asymptomatic polymenorrhea. CONCLUSION: The advanced HIV infection seems to play an important role in the occurrence of menstrual disturbances especially non gravidic amenorrhea in HIV positive women.
