Int Conf AIDS. 1989 Jun 4-9; 5: 626 (abstract no. Th.C.P.57).

US Naval Medical Research Unit No. 3, Cairo, Egypt

OBJECTIVE: To assess the prevalence of antibody to HHV6 in HIV infected patients versus uninfected controls. METHODS: A total of 66 HIV positive sera (65 HIV-1 and 1 HIV-2) and 66 age and sex match controls, collected as part of an ongoing HIV screening program between Jan 1987 and Jan 1989, were assayed for antibodies to HHV6 by an immunofluorescence assay (Pan Data Systems Inc., Rockville, MD). RESULTS: The HIV positives included 55 males and 11 females with a mean age of 27.0 +/- 9.9 years. The subjects resided in 14 different African countries. Infections were presumed to have been acquired in their home of record as well as Europe and the United States. The serologic results are presented in the table. TABULAR DATA, SEE ABSTRACT VOLUME. We considered a titer of less than or equal to 40 as negative and greater than or equal to 160 as positive with 80 being indeterminant. Twenty-three percent (15/66) of the HIV positive sera were positive for HHV6 versus 8% (5/66) of the HIV negatives; this was a significant difference (p=.0287). CONCLUSION: In this diverse group of HIV infected subjects from throughout Africa we found a significant association between HIV and HHV6 infection.
