OBJECTIVE: To determine the prevalence of HIV-1, HIV-2 and HTLV-I infection among high risk groups in Vizcaya, northern Spain. METHODS: Sera from 528 individuals were studied. 104 sera were from AIDS patients, 90 from asymptomatic heroin addicts and 65 from patients with linfoproliferative syndromes. As control 269 sera from healthy blood donors were analyzed. Serum antibodies were tested by ELISA and confirmed by IFI and/or western blot. RESULTS: No retrovirus seropositive subjects were detected in the studied normal healthy population of Vizcaya. 100% of the AIDS patients and 48% of the heroin addicts were positive for anti HIV-1 antibodies, but none was positive for HIV-2 or HTLV-I. None of the patients with lymphoproliferative syndrome, including those which were polytransfused, showed positive reactions for HTLV-I or the other retroviruses studied. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS: As previously evidenced HIV-1 infection is common in the high-risk populations of northern Spain. However, antibodies to HIV-2 or HTLV-I viruses are still not detected, even though they have been found in different countries in the world and in some of Europe.
