OBJECTIVES: To determine behavioral predictors of HIV risk for reproductive age Swedish women using past and current STD as a marker for HIV risk. METHODS: Women (1,002) attending two family planning and a youth clinic completed interviews and self-administered questionnaires (200 items), including seven dimensions of sexual behavior: Numbers and characteristics of partners, mode of partner recruitment, quality of relationship, sexual practices, drug use and sexual activity while under influence of drugs. "Cases" were defined as having a history of and/or a current infection with N. gonorrhoea, C. trachomatis, HSV and HPV. RESULTS: All seven sexual behavioral dimensions were related to STD status: TABULAR DATA, SEE ABSTRACT VOLUME. CONCLUSIONS: A large number of women with optimal health behaviors have risky sexual behavior with a potential risk of HIV-transmission, even in a country where STDs are coming under control. More focused interventions to reduce risky behavior are needed.
