OBJECTIVES: To create an International Registry of HIV Clinical Trials to dispense information on clinical trials in HIV/AIDS to a variety of users including people with HIV/AIDS, their advocacy groups, researchers, and physicians in both the developed and developing world. Our objective remains to reduce the duplication of research efforts in HIV clinical trials and promote international involvement in large scale trials. BACKGROUND: An international directory of HIV trials was assembled by the Canadian HIV Trials Network (CTN) in 1991/92. An international council was then formed at the 1992 International AIDS Conference to oversee the policy and content of the registry and to ensure its relevance to the widest possible audience. The council now consists of 22 individuals representing seven countries as well as the WHO and the PAHO. From this council, a consortium of six groups was formed including the CTN, the European AIDS Treatment Group, the American Foundation for AIDS Research, and the National Library of Medicine (U.S.), the Australian Federation of AIDS Organizations, and the National AIDS Manual (UK). DESCRIPTION OF PROJECT: This Consortium will seek to raise necessary funds, develop software, establish collection and distribution protocols, and maintain a Secretariat. We estimate that between 500-1000 clinical trials could be collected world wide. The database in development will not require the user to own any preexisting software, and will be accompanied by a manual to allow efficient access to the Trials information. A printed version of the Registry will be available for those who do not have access to an IBM compatible computer. Information to be collected includes a brief description of the study, entry criteria, the address of the principal investigator etc. SUMMARY OF FUTURE PLANS: A working prototype of the computer software will be featured at the Canadian HIV Trials Network booth in Berlin. A working database and publication will be available at the international conference in Tokyo in 1994.
