AIDS awareness inculcated through health education among school students.

OBJECTIVE: To introduce health information on HIV/AIDS at Secondary School level by training the teachers. METHODS: 100 teachers of 20 different schools were trained through lectures, using audio-visual aids; group discussions and symposia. The trained teachers were engaged to impart knowledge to their students of 12 to 18 yrs. age group. Pre and post evaluations were undertaken for both students & teachers through questionnaire. RESULTS: All the teachers were capable of acquiring the knowledge on HIV and efficient in the dissemination of the information to create AIDS Awareness among the students. 86% of the students were aware that HIV infection was transmitted sexually and condoms can prevent effectively. Food, clothes, toilets do not play a role in the transmission of AIDS. 91% welcome and insist on such awareness programmes to be included in their curriculum. CONCLUSION: In the fight against AIDS Teachers' service should be mobilised to create AIDS Awareness among the adolescents.
