Although the presence of HIV-1 IgG ab in saliva of infected adult patients has been widely documented, few publications refer to saliva in pediatric patients. Saliva and serum were collected from 40 children born to HIV-1 seropositive mothers. Saliva was collected using the Omni-Sal R collection device (Saliva Diagnostic Systems, Inc. Vancouver, WA). Abbott HIV-1/2 Ab EIA and WB (Bio Rad) was used for serum and saliva (adapted, following SDS instructions). In 19 seropositive and in 10 seronegative samples, saliva test showed concordant results. In 2 sera (ELISA +, WB -), the saliva showed negative results, and in 7 samples with indeterminate results in the serum (ELISA +, WB indet.), the saliva showed negative results. In only one out of 40 (5%) samples the saliva and serum showed discrepant results. This study should be expanded and results must be carefully interpreted to consider the use of saliva.
