Objetives: 1) Describe the epidemiological and clinical characteristics and the evolution of a group of HIV/AIDS patients from Rosario, Argentina. 2) Compare male and female groups.Material: The study included 482 HIV (+) patients, 351 (72.8%) male (M) and 130 (27.2%) female (F), followed from 1988 to december 1995. The serological diagnosis included ELISA and Western Blot. The patients were classified using the WHO Staging System. The medians of progression and survival were estimated with the Kaplan-Meier curves. Results: The average age was 27 years (range 15-55). 389 (80.7%) have completed school studies. In the M Group 133 (38%) were employees and 62 (17.7%) unemployed; in the F group 59 (45%) were housekeepers and 7 (5.3%) unemployed. 253 patients (52.5%) were single, 133 (28%) married, 21 (4.4%) divorced and 12 (2.5%) widowed. Risk behavior: intravenous drug user (IVDU) 225 (46.7%), heterosexual 128 (26.6%), homosexual 74 (15.4%), bisexual 13 (2.7%), heterosexual-IVDU 15 (3.1%), transfusion 5 (1.0%), homosexual-IVDU 2 (0.4%) and unknown 20 (4.1%). 62% of M acquired the infection by drug injection and 72.7% of F group, by heterosexual contact. 118 patients (24.5%) presented antecedents of venereal infections. Serology: Hepatitis C virus (HCV) 103/184 (56%), Hepatitis B virus (HBs Ag) 32/231 (13.9%), Cytomegalovirus (IgG) 54/85 (63.5%), Toxoplasmosis (IgG) 73/159 (45.9%), Sifilis 20/206 (9.7%), Chagas 5/122 (4.1%), Monotest 3/119 (2.5%), Widal 1/63 (1.6%) and Huddleson 0/147 (0%). Stages: initial: I 341 (70%), II 22 (4.6%), III 72 (14.9%) and IV 47 (9.8%); final: I 223 (46%), II 30 (6.2%), III 103 (21.4%), IV 126 (26.1%). The most frequent complications in stage IV were: PCP 49 (23.7%), Wasting syndrome 25 (12.1%), disseminated Hystoplasmosis 20 (9.7%), Extrapulmonary TBC 20 (9.7%) and Toxoplasmosis 19 (9.2%). The median time of progression (TTP) to stage IV was 81 and 93 months with an estimated of 41% and 48% for M/F respectively al 8 years (p=0.0458). Median of survival was 133 and 139 months for M/F with an estimated of 54% and 75% al 8 years respectively (p=0.0814). Conclusions: 1) The cohort showed a proportion of 2.7 men for each woman. There was a prevalence of patients in the third decade of life and with a good level of instruction. 2) The most frequent mode of infection in male was drug injection and in female heterosexual contact. 3) There was a high incidence of CMV, HCV and Toxoplasmosis. 4) The PCP was the most common opportunistic infection and the incidence of neoplasias was low. 5)In our population female patients had a longer TTP and survival.
