Since the first HIV-2 infection was detected in MA in 1988, 12 additional individuals have been identified by the state public health laboratory. Antibody to HIV-2 has been found by further evaluation of samples with indeterminate HIV-1 results and by testing persons with risk factors for HIV-2 or persons with AIDS-like illnesses who test HIV-1 negative. All specimens are tested under code, some as part of blinded seroprevalance studies. Tests for individual specific antibodies (Miragen assay) have been used to rule out duplicate blinded specimens. For those with available demographic information, the positive individuals are more likely to be black, male and born outside the U.S. While HIV infection is not reportable in MA, AIDS cases are. Only three HIV-2 cases have been reported to the AIDS Surveillance Unit among approximately 11,000 AIDS cases in MA residents. Thus, the lab and case data indicate little spread of HIV-2, although these are minimum estimates of the number of infections. While HIV-2 appears not to have been amplified in high risk groups in MA, routine surveillance continues and additional efforts to work with local researchers and providers are underway to improve documentation of infections and case reporting.
