AIDS dementia & HIV Psychiatry Service: an overview.

Neill KO, Ben-Nissan I, MacDonald M, Cole G, Jackson M; Australasian Society for HIV Medicine. Conference.

Annu Conf Australas Soc HIV Med. 1997 Nov 13-16; 9: 158 (poster no. P80).

AIDS Dementia & HIV Psychiatry Team, DCHC, Darlinghurst.

ISSUES: The AIDS Dementia and HIV Psychiatry Service evolved in response to the needs of people with AIDS Dementia Complex (ADC) and HIV Psychiatric Conditions (HPC). This is a highly specialised service which is being established at a time when the emphasis is on mainstreaming. However, it has been established because of a widely perceived need for better ways of dealing with the complex issues related to AIDS Dementia and HIV Psychiatric Conditions. Underpinning the proposed service model is the philosophy that the majority of people with ADC and HPC can be treated and supported in their own community, with the backup of specialised services for complex cases and as an ongoing resource for new developments and approaches to care. DESCRIPTION: This paper will give a brief overview of the AIDS Dementia and HIV Psychiatry Team, as well as describe the conception and implementation of a care package for a specific client. CONCLUSION: The use of the AIDS Dementia and HIV Psychiatry Team in enhancing and facilitating service delivery has assisted in providing care that successfully addresses the specific needs of people with ADC and HIV Psychiatric Conditions.
