The STD/HIV/AIDS clinic working successfully in an urban marginal precary area of Guatemala.

ISSUES: The community "El Milagro" (population 60,000), don't have STD/HIV/AIDS clinic. Skills and knowledge to prevent STD/HIV/AIDS is in a very low level. Health center and workers don't have diagnostic material, nor STD drugs treatments. PROJECT: MSF, government & non-government institutions, with experience in STD/HIV/AIDS prevention methods, supported the health center, the ACOVA Volunteers organization and the community, to open and develop a prevention, counseling, morbidity and treatment clinic. Health personnel were trained and prepared to induct a substantial increase of skills and knowledge in 100% of population. RESULTS: The clinic is on the responsibility of the health center, and provides services to the community, and high risk groups. 25 people were trained in counseling, universal care prevention rules and syndromic approach management in STD 10,000 information brochures were provided, this education and promotion material was produce by health personnel, the community and volunteers. Full involvement of health workers, and community volunteers in this prevention program, successfully provides better communication and well done trainee. This produces a positive change in behavior in the community. The promotional work also produced high demands in treatment, counseling and condoms.
