Issues: New strategies for empowering youth to be effective educators are necessary as the number of AIDS patients continues to give grave concern. Many peer educators, though they know the facts about AIDS lack the skills to discuss sensitive issues about sex and relationships with different groups in the community. `Stepping Stones' is an experiential programme which empowers the participants to impart knowledge on HIV and AIDS and related topics, such as gender issues, communication and relationship skills with the aim of skillfully steering one's life through a world of AIDS without becoming infected. Description: In this paper we show how three groups of youth who participated in this programme themselves have benefited to the degree of becoming confident and efficient trainers within the community. They are now equipped with skills to teach in Primary and Secondary Schools, youth and adult community groups. They have become highly motivated to stop the spread of AIDS and give time to raising awareness of AIDS in local bars, city streets and market places. The programme, which is discussed, has given them the skills to discuss sensitive issues of sex with the community and to impart life skills to other youth empowering them with the ability to change their behaviour. Conclusion: Well trained youth are an invaluable resource for educating all levels of society about HIV and AIDS and empowering people to change behaviour. Stepping Stones programme is an excellent training course for youth educators.
