Issues: Acupuncture and Chinese Herbology have gained acceptance as supplements to standard HIV/AIDS treatments in the United States. There is currently little research documenting effectiveness for this use since it is difficult to conduct double-blind studies. Most of the current literature has not attempted to assess patients' own experiences in using these alternative therapies. Description: This paper will analyze information obtained from chart review and personal interviews of HIV-positive individuals using acupuncture and Chinese herbology as part of their overall treatment plan. Special attention will be given to treatment of medication side-effects, levels of fatigue, CD4 count, viral load levels, and emotional or substance abuse disorder treatment. Conclusions: The growth of Acupuncture and Chinese Herbology as popular treatment modalities for HIV/AIDS has helped many individuals regain a sense of well-being and purpose in their lives. Individuals are often able to return to work and exercise programs after receiving minimum levels of acupuncture and Chinese Herbology treatment.
