BACKGROUND: From 1995 to 1998, a nosocomial outbreak of multidrug resistant tuberculosis caused by Mycobacterium bovis, (MDR-M.bovis) resistant to twelve drug occurred among, 30 HIV-infected patients in the Univ. Hosp. of Malaga. Objective: To evaluate the factors that conditioned the incubation period of MDR-M. bovis in HIV infected patients. Method: Definitions: Patient ``Possibly exposed: hospitalization at the same time as a infective patient. Date of exposure: first date of exposure. Incubation period (for patients with only one exposure period): period from exposure to diagnosis. Parameters analyzed: Numerical variables: CD4+ lymphocyte count at exposure (CD4E), CD4+ lymphocyte count at diagnosis (CD4D), duration and number of contacts with infective patients, existence or absence of previous tuberculosis (Y/N previous TB), had or had not received antituberculosis treatment during of after exposure (Y/N-antiTB). Statistical analysis: linear regression analysis for the numerical variables and the Mann-Whitney non parametric test for the dichotomic variables.RESULTS: Numerical variables: CD4E (r=0.852 , p<0.0001); CD4D (r=0.27, p=0.2); days of exposures (r=0.06, p=0.7); number of contacts (r=-0.1, p=0.4) and age (r=-0.07, p=0.7). Dichotomic variables: CD4E greater or less than 100 cells/?L (466 and 97 days, p<0.05), Y/N previous TB (200 and 215 days, p=0.8), (Y/N-antiTB) (199 and 222 days, p=0.7).CONCLUSIONS: In our study the only factor that conditioned the incubation period for the MDR-M.bovis was the degree of immunodeficiency of the patients at the exposure.KEYWORDS: Multidrug resistant tuberculosis; Tuberculosis
