Talking dirty to lesbians: Safer sex and sexual practices workshops in lesbian communities in the Philippines.

Sarabia-de Leon AL; International Conference on AIDS.

Int Conf AIDS. 2002 Jul 7-12; 14: abstract no. G12661.

Can't Live in the Closet, Inc., Quezon City, Philippines

ISSUES: Lack of proper sexuality education/information, and Filipino women's usual shyness in discussing personal experiences of sex and sexual practices, makes a problematic combination when addressing sexual health and STI prevention DESCRIPTION: Focus Group discussions on sexual identity and orientation would be able to draw certain beliefs about roles and expectations between lesbian partners. This would in turn lead to discussions of sexual practices, this becoming the entry point for introducting relevant information of prevention of sexually transmitted infections. LESSONS LEARNED: Sexual roles and prectices seem to be determined by role expectation between partners, i.e. who is the "masculine/dominant" and the "feminine/passive" partner. While it is possible that sex positions and practices may reverse in the course of the relationship, there must be tacit agreement on how this will be done, as it may affect the nature of the relationship. It is important, too, to understand who takes the responsibility for what sexual practices the partners decide to undertake, and how this, in turn, affects decisions re safer sex practices. whether violence and abuse because of switching roles takes place would also be of great interest.
