OBJECTIVES: The study sought 1) to identify the symptoms that HIV positive women on HAART experience during three phases of their menstrual cycles, 2) to see if adherence to medications varies through the menstrual cycle and 3) to measure if the symptoms experienced during the menstrual cycle are associated with adherence to HAART. METHODS: Fifty-four HIV positive women on HAART were followed for 12 weeks with weekly telephone interviews. The interviewer asked whether the patients had experienced any of 29 symptoms associated with both HAART side effects and the menstrual cycle, whether they had had a period that week and about their adherence to HAART. The weeks were divided into menstrual week (MW), premenstrual week (PW) and and other weeks (non-MW/PW) weeks. RESULTS: Responses were obtained for 58.6% of the weeks included in the study. Data were available for 87 menstrual weeks, 67 premenstrual weeks and 226 other weeks. Women were more likely to experience skin problems (p=.07), energy loss (p=.05), joint pain (.02), bloating (p=.01), breast tenderness (p=.03) and chills (p=.03) in non-MW/PW weeks. They were more likely to have cramps during the menstrual week. The women were slightly less adherent during the menstrual weeks (88%) than during the premenstrual weeks (94%) and non-MW/PW weeks (93%). This was not significant. Feeling sad or depressed (p=.01) and having chills (p=.08) were associated with non-adherence.
