Setting: 300 undergraduate students of King George's Medical College, Lucknow, India. Research Question: Existing level of awareness of Universal Precautions in undergraduate medical students. Method: Undergraduate students were selected on random basis. They had been exposed to the knowledge about these Universal precautions in past. They were served a questionnaire having 50 questions on Universal precautions. Results: They comprised 250 males (83%) and 50 females(17%), 69 (23%) answered more than 50% of the questions correctly, 150 students (50%) were almost ignorant about this entity(less than 10% questions answered and only 3% were correct, 21 (7%) students (14males and 7 females) correctly answered more than 75% questions,and 60 students failed to answer any question correctly. Those who answered more than 75% questions correctly claimed to acquire knowledge by self reading, media specifically electronic media on Door Darshan and only 14 (4.6%) accepted the role of medical college teachings in their knowledge. About 173 students did not know the difference in infectivity between hepatitis and AIDS. 33 (11%)students claimed that they had never seen a condom, 60 (20%) students were convinced that sex would not be a pleasure with condom, None knew female condom and none knew Microbicide jelly, 78% did not know way to sterilize the equipments and 59% were completely ignorant of actions to be taken after an accidental exposure to AIDS. Conclusion The undergraduate students must be taught with audio visual aids and practical exposure about Universal precautions and the existing level of knowledge about UNIVERSAL PRECAUTIONS in undergraduate M. B., B. S students was extremely unsatisfactory and must be addressed urgently to avoid epidemic proportions of high risk cases.
