Int Conf AIDS. 2004 Jul 11-16; 15: abstract no. ThPeD7593.

Population Council, Bangkok, Thailand

Background: Evaluate whether a school-based HIV/AIDS curriculum and teacher training package ("Teens on Smart Sex") improved Thai college students' sexual knowledge, attitudes and behavior. Method: Data were collected from students at 3 intervention and 3 comparison teacher colleges before, during and after the intervention, using a computer-based system. In the intervention and comparison colleges 308 and 299 males and 595 and 590 females respectively completed the survey all 3 times. Results: "Teens on Smart Sex" improved students' knowledge and attitudes about HIV/AIDS and sexual health issues. It also had an impact on the adoption of protective behaviors, however these changes were limited. The course had greater impact on females than males and also for those who had never had sex compared to those who were sexually experienced. Sexually inexperienced female students with lower levels of knowledge about the disease and with poorer attitudes about PLHA gained the most from the course. Conclusions: School based HIV/AIDS program can contribute to changing knowledge, attitudes and behavior related to HIV/AIDS. Programs need to account for differences between male and female students, and also between those with and without sexual experience.
