Issues: The provision of multidisciplinary services to people living with HIV/AIDS in Eastern Europe is still a process of trial and error. Various efforts have been made in order to identity ways in which a programme will best suit the needs of its beneficiaries, thus fully achieving its purpose. The most important question that arises is how can we, service providers, identify and consolidate the role of affected young people in programme implementation. Description: This paper will discuss the process of developing programmes for young people living with HIV/AIDS by involving them directly from the project design to its actual implementation. Our fourteen-year practice revealed that a successful programme is the programme that combines the experience and resources of our non-governmental organisation with the experience, initiatives and ideas of young people that are direct or indirect beneficiaries of our programmes. Two of our programmes - "Combating Social Exclusion of Young People Affected by HIV/AIDS" and "Young People's E-Forum" - will be analysed from the perspective of the involvement of adolescents from Romania, Spain, Portugal, Italy and Russia, and presented as case studies. Both programmes are addressed to young people living with HIV/AIDS. The first programme aims to identify with the help of the affected young people ways of reducing social discrimination and stigma. The second one offers support through an online forum to affected youngsters that are confronted with issues such as diagnosis disclosure, discrimination, improvement of social, psychological and medical services. Lessons learned: The active involvement of young people in programme development is beneficial for implementing a successful programme. Recommendations: The young people living with HIV/AIDS must be acknowledged as equal partners in the development of a programme that is designed for them.
