HIV/AIDS knowledge, sex and condoms in first grade high school adolescents in Gombe State, North East Nigeria.

Background: To determine HIV/AIDS knowledge and Sexual risk behaviour High school adolescents. Method: Questionnaire/interview to 845 students. Results: There were 421 males and 424 females.676 (80%) have heard of HIV/AIDS through Radio 261 (31%), health worker 245 (29%) and friends 118 (14%). 616 (73%) have heard of AIDS related death and included school mate 49 (8%), brother 55 (9%), sister 49 (8%). 608 (72%) of students have discussed AIDS with a friend(170)28%, schoolmate157 (26%). 676 (80%) have received sex education from one or both parent. 330 (39%) have discussed AIDS with parents. 650 (77%) of students have received lectures on HIV/AIDS from their teachers. How does one get HIV/AIDS include sexual intercourse 659 (78%), unscreened blood 616 (80%) sharing needles and blades 633 (75%), and mother to child 625 (74%).304 (36%) have ever had sexual intercourse. 63 (21%) made Sexual debut at 13 years 63 (21%) at 15 years, 52 (17%) at 18 years. During their life time 36 (11%) have had 5 sexual partners, 60 (20%) 4 partners. Three months preceding, 24 (9%) have had sexual intercourse with 6 persons, 31 (10%) 3 persons. 138 (45%) had drank alcohol and 175 (57%) used a condom the last time they had sexual intercourse. Condom was not used in last sexual intercourse because there was none to use 91 (29%), condoms are difficult to get 48 (15%), did not feel like using it 54 (18%) and are expensive 14 (5%).154 (50%) have had sex with an older man or woman. Reasons include money 76 (43%), goods 30 (19%), peer pressure 24 (15%). 90 (21%) males have visited a sex worker. 124 (40%) have had abnormal urethral discharge and/or scrotal/penile ulcers. 68 (44%) received treatment from private clinic and 22 (14%) self treatment. 241 (28%) think they at risk for HIV, 180 (21%) don't think so, 382 (45%) say they are not. Conclusion Awareness and knowledge of HIV/AIDS amongst adolescents have not prevented risky sexual behaviour.
