Rainbow Sky Association of Thailand, Bangkok, Thailand
Issues: Men who have sex with men - a hard to reach group in Bangkok - must be involved in developing HIV prevention programs for their communities. This is important for reasons of acceptability, validity and sustainability of programs at the community level as well as personal development and a feeling of contribution to society at the individual level. Descriptions: Rainbow Sky Association of Thailand - Thailand's first registered gay organization - was established in January 2001 for the primary purpose of providing HIV prevention outreach activities to MSM in Bangkok. Today, the organization continues to grow and has established itself as a center for MSM to meet, study, socialize and work together for the betterment of local and national communities in Thailand. Direct and indirect approaches are used to involve MSM in Rainbow Sky HIV prevention activities, including alternative activities (e.g., sports, parties and performances), community peer outreach (e.g., parks, internet and entertainment venues), and community advocacy. The peer educators are recruited and trained by other Rainbow Sky members, who at times may also serve as mentors to new members. Currently, there are over 300 peer educators in Rainbow Sky from all professions and backgrounds. Lessons learned: When developing a peer-focused HIV prevention program, it is helpful to incorporate cultural, social and personal development opportunities for members. Having a central base to meet, work and socialize is an important component to facilitating personal development and creating group identity. As a result of Rainbow Sky successes in Bangkok, the organization is establishing chapters in the North, East and South of Thailand that adapt to local context and culture. Recommendations: MSM can successfully come together to develop HIV prevention programs for their communities and for personal, social and cultural development in a developing country setting. Having a base location is an important factor that may contribute to the success of a peer-serving CBO.
