NLM Gateway Collections Updates

August 18, 2009

  • Access to a new collection, "Images from the History of Medicine (IHM)," was added to the NLM Gateway in the Other Information Resources category. IHM is a database of nearly 70,000 images in the National Library of Medicine's (NLM) historical collections. The collection of portraits, photographs, fine prints, caricatures, genre scenes, posters, and other graphic art illustrates the social and historical aspects of medicine from the Middle Ages to the present. The fact sheet provides additional information on this resource.

    • Access to a new collection, "Profiles in Science," was added to the NLM Gateway in the Other Resources category. Profiles in Science contains archival collections of leaders in biomedical research and public health. The site promotes the use of the Internet for research and teaching in the history of biomedical science. The fact sheet provides additional information on this resource.
    • A "Clear check marks" option was added to the Select an Action pull down menu.

    May 01, 2006

    • Access to a new collection, "Bookshelf," was added to the NLM Gateway in the Bibliographic Resources category. The Bookshelf is a growing collection of full text biomedical books, and includes other resources such as GeneReviews and Health Services/Technology Assessment Text (HSTAT). The Bookshelf home page provides a complete book list.
    • Access to a new collection, "Household Products Database," was added to the NLM Gateway in the Consumer Health Resources category. The Household Products Database is a consumer's guide that provides information on the potential health effects of chemicals contained in more than 5,000 common household products used inside and around the home. The fact sheet provides additional information on this resource.
    • The results summary page will now display Error if an error is encountered in searching a particular collection or N/A if a search is not applicable to a particular collection. Previously, a hit count of zero was displayed.
    • Default text and link colors are now being set. Visited results links will now change to the visited link color.
    • A warning message ("One or more search terms were dropped. See Search Details") is now displayed on the results page if part of a user search query is dropped, but the search is still run and results are returned to the user.
    • Additional fields - Investigator Link, Performing Organization Link, Performing Organization Phone, Supporting Agency Link, and Supporting Agency Phone - have been added to HSRPRoj.
    • The Gateway language table was updated with the latest MARC language codes.
    • In DIRLINE, last revision date was changed to date revised, and supporting agency and limitations on use were deleted.

    • A new field qualifier, corporate author ([CN]), was added for searching. The NLM Gateway Help provides information on searching by corporate author.
    • Meeting abstracts search results are now retrieved from standardized XML data. This allows additional fields to be displayed, as well as the display of diacritics. In the conversion to standardized XML output, some fields were converted to existing fields, and other fields were dropped.

    • Access to the following five new toxicological collections was added to the NLM Gateway:
      • CCRIS: Chemical Carcinogenesis Research Information System

    October 4, 2005

    • TOXLINE Special and HSDB searching were enhanced so that results match those received on the TOXNET site itself. Searches without Boolean operators will have results that are relevance ranked.
    • Meeting abstracts and HSRProj items were transferred to the SE search retrieval system. Search results will be identical in many cases. The most notable difference is that title and text word searches will retrieve the singular as well as the plural forms (e.g., heart attack [ti] will retrieve items with heart attacks in the title, as well as heart attack). Search details were changed to reflect the new search syntax.

    • MedlinePlus searching was enhanced in the following ways:
      • Results match those received on the MedlinePlus site itself.
      • A new collection, MedlinePlus - Other Resources was introduced for databases, organizations, directories and the like.
      • The MedlinePlus - Health Tutorials collection was retired; tutorials will be displayed under Health Topics, as is done on the MedlinePlus site.
    • Subject subsets were implemented for NLM Catalog.

    • Access to NLM's book, serials, and audiovisual materials was changed from LocatorPlus to NLM Catalog. Read the technical note in the NLM Technical Bulletin.
    • The Grateful Med note has been removed from the MeSH Term Information page.

    June 21, 2004

    • Access to a new collection, "Genetics Home Reference," was added to the NLM Gateway in the Consumer Health category. The Genetics Home Reference collection is the National Library of Medicine's web site for consumer information about genetic conditions and the genes responsible for those conditions. The Genetics Home Reference fact sheet provides additional information on this resource.
    • LOCATORplus was changed to LocatorPlus.

    March 24, 2004

    • Access to a new collection, "TOXLINE Special," was added to the NLM Gateway in the Journal Citations category. The TOXLINE Special collection contains bibliographic information covering the biochemical, pharmacological, physiological, and toxicological effects of drugs and other chemicals. The TOXLINE fact sheet provides additional information on this resource.
    • Direct links for free full text articles were added to the Results, Expanded Item, and Document Ordering pages.
    • Qualifiers are now available via the "Find Terms" feature.
    • The Gateway language table was updated with the latest MARC language codes.
    • MEDLINEplus was changed to MedlinePlus.
    • ClinicalTrials.gov was changed to ClinicalTrials.gov.

    December 22, 2003

    • Access to a new collection, "HSDB: Hazardous Substances Data Bank," was added to the NLM Gateway in the Other Collections category. HSDB focuses on the toxicology of potentially hazardous chemicals. It is enhanced with information on human exposure, industrial hygiene, emergency handling procedures, environmental fate, regulatory requirements, and related areas. The HSDB fact sheet provides additional information on this resource.
    • Access to a new collection, "OMIM: Online Mendelian Inheritance in Man," was added to the NLM Gateway in the Other Collections category. OMIM (Online Mendelian Inheritance in Man) is a catalog of human genes and genetic disorders, with links to literature references, sequence records, maps, and related databases. It is based on the book, Mendelian Inheritance in Man. The OMIM Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) provides additional information on this resource.
    • The LinkOut feature was added for PubMed citations.
    • Direct links for Pubmed Central articles were added to the Results and Expanded Item pages.
    • For terms with British and American spellings, the text word search of a Gateway subject search will include both the British and the American spelling of the word.

    November 3, 2003

    • Access to two new collections, "MedlinePlus Health Tutorials" and "MedlinePlus Current Health News" were added to the NLM Gateway in the Consumer Health category.
    • Limits for the current search are now displayed under the Gateway Features bar.
    • Author name truncation for searching has been added to the Meeting Abstracts and HSRProj collections.
    • Direct links for Pubmed Central articles were added to the Document Ordering page.
    • A spell checker for user input was added.

    • OLDMEDLINE citations have been added to MEDLINE/PubMed. The separate OLDMEDLINE collection has been removed. Read about OLDMEDLINE Citations Join PubMed in the NLM Technical Bulletin.

    • Phrase detection was added so users are no longer required to put search phrases in double quotes. Read about Phrase detection in the Gateway in the NLM Technical Bulletin. See the Help for more information.
    • ISSN searching was added for the OLDMEDLINE collection.

    March 5, 2003

    • Search subsets for AIDS, Bioethics, History of Medicine, and Space Life Sciences were added to the NLM Gateway. Subsets are available via a pull down menu on the Limits page or a new field qualifier, subsets ([SB]). Read about Search subsets in the Gateway in the NLM Technical Bulletin. See the Help for more information.
    • All meeting abstracts items have been combined into a single collection: Meeting Abstracts, and items have been updated with keywords from 2003 MeSH.

    February 5, 2003

    • Access to a new collection, "ClinicalTrials.gov," was added to the NLM Gateway in the Consumer Health category. The ClinicalTrials.gov collection is a registry of clinical trials for both federally and privately funded trials "of experimental treatments for serious or life-threatening diseases or conditions." Read about ClinicalTrials.gov in the Gateway in the NLM Technical Bulletin.
    • The "Order Documents", "Delete", and "Download or Display" buttons were added to the bottom of the locker page.
    • Locker items are now sorted by collection and entry time. Newest entries are added at the bottom.

    December 18, 2002

    • Search terms are mapped to Supplementary Concept terms when appropriate.
    • A maximum of five hundred (500) items may be stored in the locker.

    September 19, 2002

    • Automatically generated MeSH terms were added to all meeting abstracts and are found in the Keyword field. Previously assigned MeSH terms were removed. Read about automated indexing in the NLM Technical Bulletin.
    • The AIDS Meetings (with MeSH) collection and the AIDS Meetings collection were combined into the AIDS Meetings collection.
    • A new field qualifier, publication type ([PT]), was added for searching. The NLM Gateway Help provides information on searching by fields.
    • The Collective Name label was changed to Corporate Author in preferences and the labelled display.
    • The Privacy Policy button was renamed to Copyright & Privacy.

    June 3, 2002

    • HSRProj search results are now retrieved from XML data. This allows additional search fields to be displayed, as well as the display of diacritics.

    May 15, 2002

    • Access to a new collection, "MedlinePlus Medical Encyclopedia," was added to the NLM Gateway in the Consumer Health category.
    • Users may hit the "Enter" key instead of selecting the "Search" button to initiate a search.
    • OLDMEDLINE search results are now retrieved from XML data. This allows the display of diacritics.
    • Users may now enter month and day for publication date searching. See the Help for more information.
    • A "Display Results" button was added to the Details of Search page.
    • Email verification was added to the Gateway. Users will receive an advisory message if sending the email fails.

    April 9, 2002

    • PubMed search results are now retrieved from the PubMed XML output. This allows additional search fields to be displayed, as well as the display of diacritics.
    • The name of the DIRLINE collection was expanded to DIRLINE: Directory of Health Orgs.
    • The cursor is automatically placed in the search box on a new search.
    • Any new browser windows opened by Gateway are smaller than the original browser window.

    • The login screen was modified to include a "Use Preferences" checkbox. Users may log in and use their locker without using their preferences.

    February 11, 2002

    • Three buttons were added to the Expanded Item page: "Download or Display", "Order Documents", and "Put in Locker". These buttons apply to the expanded item only.

    December 17, 2001

    • A "Restore All Defaults" button was added to the Preferences page, and the "Restore Defaults" button was renamed "Restore These Defaults." Users may restore the default preferences settings for the selected page, or users may restore all default preferences settings.

    November 15, 2001

    • An "Order Documents" button was added to the Results page. Users may order directly from the Results page or place items in the Locker for ordering.
    • On the Results page, the placement of the "Download or Display" button and the "Deselect All" button were swapped.
    • The "Put in Locker" button action was changed to place all items from the current page in the locker if no items are specified.
    • The "Internet Grateful Med" button on the Gateway sidebar was removed. Internet Grateful Med was retired on September 28, 2001.

    September 5, 2001

    • A new collection, "Space Life Sciences Meetings," was added to the NLM Gateway in the Meeting Abstracts category. The Space Life Sciences Meetings collection includes the meeting abstracts from the former SPACELINE database.
    • The Download or Display page was redesigned, and a new feature was added. Users may add a message to results that are Sent via Email.
    • The Search Results header format for the Display for Printing, Save to File, and Send via Email options was improved.
    • The author brief display and title brief display fields were removed from the LOCATORplus list of fields. The author field and title field were modified, and will be used for all display options. Conference was added to the default brief display.
    • The "Order Documents" button on the Gateway sidebar was changed to Ordering Info. This button links to the Loansome Doc Ordering System web site.
    • Changes were implemented to improve web accessibility for all NLM Gateway users.

    May 23, 2001

    • There were two changes in the "Find Terms" feature:
      • A "Select a MeSH Term" page was added to select a MeSH term with multiple meanings.
      • Entry Terms and See Also were added to the MeSH Term Information page.
    • The document collection formerly referred to as "HSR Meetings" was renamed "Health Services Research Mtgs."
    • Status tags for the PubMed collection were updated.
    • A chart for NLM Gateway Collections Updates is available, and a link was added on the Overview page.
    • Meeting abstracts from the International Society of Technology Assessment in Health Care Annual Meeting (2000) and the Academy for Health Services Research and Health Policy Annual Meeting (2000) were added to the Health Services Research Mtgs collection.

    April 10, 2001

    • A new system was introduced to help users who forget their password. Current and new users are asked to provide a question and its answer that is easy to remember. If you forget your password, the question is displayed. If you enter the correct answer to the question, the password is displayed.
    • The background for the search box was changed to match the background of the results summary box.
    • The link colors were changed to the web browser defaults colors.
    • The Unique Identifier (UI) was removed from the default brief display for all collections.
    • Training manuals that include the NLM Gateway are available for download, and links were added on the Gateway Help and Contact Us web pages.

    March 2, 2001

    • There were three changes to the Results Summary box:
      • The Databanks category was renamed Other Collections.
      • The Consumer Health category was moved from the fifth entry to the third entry. The new category order is Journal Citations, Books / Serials / AVs, Consumer Health, Meeting Abstracts, and Other Collections.
      • The category names now link to a fuller description of the categories in the Gateway Overview.
    • Items with complete details are now available in all three formats - labelled, unlabelled, and export.
    • The two letter search field qualifier for ISSN was changed to IS from SN.

    February 2, 2001

    • A new collection, "HSR Meetings," was added to the NLM Gateway in the Meeting Abstracts category. The HSR Meetings collection includes the meeting abstracts from the former HealthSTAR database.
    • Access to a new collection, "DIRLINE®," was added to the NLM Gateway in the Consumer Health category. The DIRLINE collection is a directory of health-related organizations. The DIRLINE fact sheet provides additional information on this resource.
    • Two new field qualifiers were added for searching. You may now search by unique identifier ([UI]) and by substance name ([NM]). The NLM Gateway Help provides information on searching by fields.
    • The search box was added to the Locker, Preferences, and Login pages.

    November 28, 2000

    • A new collection, "AIDS Meetings," was added to the NLM Gateway in the Meeting Abstracts category. The AIDS Meetings collection has the meeting abstracts from the XIII International AIDS Conference held in Durban South Africa, July 9-14, 2000. These are not MeSH® indexed. Please note that the document collection formerly referred to as "AIDS Meetings" was renamed "AIDS Meetings (with MeSH)."
    • A change was made in searching by field qualifiers. In the new release, all field qualifiers should be entered after the search term or terms, and must be entered after each term, for example: "macular degeneration" [mh]. This is consistent with the method used in PubMed®. Previously, field qualifiers were entered before the search term or terms, and the field qualifier applied to the search terms that followed it until a new field qualifier was entered.
    • The Login page and the Create New User ID page for the Locker and Preferences features were redesigned.
    • On the Limits page, the default ending publication year (if not specified by the user) is the current year. Previously the default ending publication year was the beginning publication year.

    In addition, some software bugs were fixed, and changes to the underlying system were made to improve Gateway functionality and efficiency.

    October 16, 2000

    The initial version of the NLM Gateway was released to the public.
